Fun in the fall? Head to Oktoberfest in Germany. Oktoberfest officially starts in the city of Munich, where the mayor gives the ceremonial tapping of the keg and utters the immortal phrase "O'zapft is!" (It is tapped!) to signify that the celebration has begun. The local folks wear the traditional lederhosen for men and dirndl outfits for the women. The event is mainly sponsored by beer-makers that have specially brewed beers just for the occasion. Event goers can also sample the best of German traditional gastronomic goodies like pretzels (Brezn), pork knuckles (Haxn), cheese noodles (Kaasspotzn), potato pancakes (Reiberdatschi) and all kinds of sausages.
An aerial view Germany looks like a miniature train landscape packed with old towns, medieval houses, Gothic churches, and small villages. In the western cities such as Bonn and Dusseldorf some French influences are still obvious. Trier, the oldest city of Germany and former capital of The Roman Empire has an impressive cathedral and history that goes back to Charlemagne.
There is not one, but many major cities in Germany. Each city has its own exclusive character formed by its history and surrounding region. Very different architectural styles, art treasures and distinct lifestyles are unique to the culture in each city.
